What is LED light therapy?
LED (light-emitting diode) therapy uses wavelengths of visible light to rejuvenate the skin. The light penetrates deep within the skin to boost radiance and treat a variety of issues, such as sun damage, acne, rosacea, eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis.
The most common colors of light are red, blue, and near-infrared, although yellow and green are occasionally used as well. More than one light color can be used per treatment, and each hue of light benefits the skin in its own unique way:
Red light has anti-inflammatory properties, soothes irritation and rosacea, and is believed to stimulate collagen production.
Blue light kills bacteria and is used to treat acne.
Near-infrared light smooths fine lines and wrinkles, reduces inflammation, and helps heal acne and wounds.
What happens during LED light therapy?
You’ll sit or lie down in a treatment room and put on your goggles.
There are several different ways the dermatologist can expose your skin to the light; it basically comes down to their preference. A freestanding light, full-face mask, or handheld lamp may be used. The lights may pulse or flash, but there is no pain during the procedure. In fact, the treatment feels pleasant and relaxing. An LED light therapy session usually lasts for 30 minutes.
